The Crystal Method- Drive: Nike+ Original Run
Even if you’re The Crystal Method, with many marathon concert performances and club DJ sets to your credit, composing music to fire a 45-minute run presents a unique challenge. As creators of Drive—the inaugural Nike+ Original Run and the first in an ongoing series—Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland zeroed in on what the runner needs to stay energized for the duration of a workout.
Scott: “It’s a challenge because usually when we create music, we’re focused on what we like and what our fans will like. We’re not accustomed to thinking about a particular activity that has to go with the music. For this project, we thought about the movement and the energy that goes into exercising and running and the sort of goal-oriented activity that goes along with working out. When I’ve worked out…it’s always about goals: ‘I’m doing the uphill now, I’ve got four minutes until I get to the goal.’ So we created songs that have a lot of dynamic motion to them songs that go places.”
Ken: “I think our tempos work really well…it really helps to keep you going when you have the right tempo. This piece is a complete workout, from warm-up on, threading together different beats and sounds. Some of the music is really intense, with a high BPM for running quickly. Then you have slower sections for the cool-down.”
Using this Workout
In Drive, The Crystal Method have achieved a soundtrack that puts runners through the paces of a solid workout. It builds gradually, giving you time to warm up and find a steady rhythm. Then things get heavy, pushing you to a slightly faster stride before coming back down to earth for a well deserved cool-down.
