Merry/Happy____Fill In The Blank

The Sharpe Tree Christmas Eve

For those of YOU that celebrate Christmas, as many of YOU do, "Merry Christmas". For those of YOU that do NOT celebrate Christmas, "happy whatever to YOU". As I have noticed this year, alot of people are fed up with the religious overtones tied to Christmas, and, prefer celebrating the season as the "Winter Solstice".

In these times of global unrest on a variety of platforms, it is a great time to just stop, be with friends/family, and, reflect on just exactly what is taking place on the planet and how YOU and yours plan to handle the coming challenges, good or bad. Whatever name YOU choose for the season that brings YOU comfort, go with it.

Have a safe and enjoyable day and season of peace, love and focus.

Video Game Sales Make Billions

November video game sales near $3 billion

NEW YORK (AP) - Americans may be cutting back on holiday shopping, but they are still buying video
games - to the tune of nearly $3 billion in November, according to data from market researcher NPD Group.

U.S. retail sales of
video game hardware, software and accessories jumped 10 percent last month from the year-ago period to $2.91 billion, boosted by strong sales of Nintendo Co.'s Wii, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) (MSFT)'s Xbox 360 and the alien shooter game "Gears of War 2."

The availability of a broad range of games is one reason for the industry's ongoing solid performance, said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. Games also provide a relatively cheap form of stay-at-home entertainment.

The industry, Frazier said, is still on track to rack up $22 billion in U.S. sales this year.

November and December are crucial months for video game companies. Many of them make the bulk of their money during the holidays.

This week, Electronic Arts Inc. (
ERTS) (ERTS), the publisher of the popular "Madden" football game series, warned that sales have been weak in North America and Europe. Without giving specific guidance, EA said its fiscal 2009 results will fall short of the forecast it gave in October.

But EA's warning did not seem to signal a broader downturn for the industry.

Hardware sales, which include gaming consoles like the
Wii as well as handheld systems like Sony Corp. (SNE) (SNE)'s PSP, jumped 10 percent to $1.21 billion.

Nintendo enjoyed perhaps the greatest success in November, with 2 million Wiis sold - the most yet in a month, according to Denise Kaigler, vice president of corporate affairs. The Japanese company boosted production of the easy-to-master gaming system in July to keep up with seemingly insatiable demand. Nonetheless, on Thursday afternoon, both
Best Buy's and Wal-Mart's Web sites were out of stock.

Microsoft's Xbox 360, meanwhile, sold 836,000 units. Spokesman David Dennis said the company's games business had "great momentum" heading into the final stretch of the
holiday season. The PlayStation 3, from Sony, sold 378,000 units.

Sales of video game
software grew 11 percent to $1.31 billion. Besides "Gears of War 2," which sold 1.6 million copies, "Call of Duty: World at War" by Activision Blizzard Inc. (ATVI) (ATVI) and Nintendo's "Wii Play" and "Wii Fit" also did well. Electronic Arts had just one title, the zombie horror game "Left 4 Dead," in the top 10.

Now YOU know where everybody's money is going. VIDEO GAMES! As the article points out, "it's a good stay at home entertainment value". AND, there is something for everyone. As a recent study pointed out earlier this month, "50% of adults play video games". YOU see, it's not just a kid thing. Matter of fact, there are probably some grandpas and grandmas that will destroy YOU on some of the Wii sports games.

Rodan or What? It's Big!

Prehistoric Flying Reptile Was Bigger Than a Car

A fossil of a toothless flying pterosaur, with a body bigger than some family cars, represents one of the largest of these extinct reptiles ever to be found and has forced the creation of a new genus, scientists announced today.

Pterosaurs ruled the skies 115 million years ago during the dinosaur age. They are often mistaken for dinosaurs.

Mark Witton of the University of Portsmouth identified the creature from a partial skull fossil. Witton estimates the beast would have had a 5.5-yard (5-meter) wingspan. It stood more than a yard (about 1 meter) tall at the shoulder.

"Some of the previous examples we have from this family in China are just 60 centimeters [about two feet] long — as big as the skull of the new species. Put simply, it dwarfs any chaoyangopterid we've seen before by miles," Witton said.

The finding also is significant because it originated in Brazil and is the only example of the Chaoyangopteridae, a group of toothless pterosaurs, to be found outside China.

Witton has christened the new species Lacusovagus, meaning "lake wanderer," after the large body of water in which the remains were buried. The findings are detailed in the November issue of the journal Palaeontology.

He was asked to examine the specimen, which had lain in a German museum for several years after its discovery in the Crato Formation of the Araripe Basin in northeastern Brazil, an area well known for the its fossils and their excellent state of preservation.

However, he said that this fossil was preserved in an unusual way, making its interpretation difficult.

"Usually fossils like this are found lying on their sides, but this one was lying on the roof of its mouth and had been rather squashed, which made even figuring out whether it had teeth difficult," Witton said.

"Still, it's clear to see that Lacusovagus had an unusually wide skull which has implications for its feeding habits — maybe it liked particularly large prey. The remains are very fragmentary, however, so we need more specimens before we can draw any conclusions."

The discovery of this pterosaur fossil in Brazil, so far away from its closest relatives in China, demonstrates how little scientists still know about the distribution and evolutionary history of this group of creatures, Witton said.

Here we go again, gettting another step closer to finding a "dragon". All this one is missing is a tail, teeth and fire breath. Something new is being discovered all the time. What's next?

Want A Hit Of This? 2,700 Year Old Marijuana

Huge Stash of Marijuana Found in Ancient Tomb

Duuuuuude! The world's oldest stash of marijuana has been found in far western China, according to an article in the Journal of Experimental Botany.

An ancient Caucasian people, probably the Indo-European-speaking Yuezhi whose fair-haired mummies keep turning up in Xinjiang province, seem to have buried one of their shamans with a whopping 789 grams of high-potency pot 2,700 years ago.

That's about 28 ounces of killer green bud, worth perhaps $8,000 at today's street prices, and enough to keep Harold and Kumar happy for a couple of days.

"It was common practice in burials to provide materials needed for the afterlife," lead author Ethan B. Russo, a practicing neurologist and prominent medicinal-marijuana advocate based in Missoula, Mont., tells the Canadian Press. "No hemp or seeds were provided for fabric or food. Rather, cannabis as medicine or for visionary purposes was supplied."

But the researchers couldn't tell if the weed was meant to be smoked or eaten. No pipes, bongs or rolling papers were found in the tomb.

The ancient Greek historian Herodotus relates how the Scythians, Iranian-speaking nomads who roamed the steppes to the west of the Yuezhi in the first millennium B.C., liked to throw marijuana onto bonfires to induce trancelike states. It's possible the buried shaman followed similar practices.

See, people were using weed thousands of years ago and here is modern man(supposedly)still jerking around about legalizing it and it's use. If it was good enough for the Scythians and a shaman, then it's good enough for me!
