That is why he migrated to the Village, because the "brothers" couldn't appreciate what he was doing. The last time I saw Jimi, was in Sam Ash on 46th st. in Manhattan. About 7 months or so before he ...crossed over. We had a great conversation, and, Jimi was not happy with things. He felt as though he was not being appreciated for his music and talent and had become nothing more than some kind of freak show spectacle. I told him that he created that image and thats what most people wanted to experience. I do miss him in the physical, but, as long as his music is here, "so is he".

Plankton, base of ocean food web, declineing fast!

Despite their tiny size, plant plankton found in the world's oceans are crucial to much of life on Earth. They are the foundation of the bountiful marine food web, produce half the world's oxygen and suck up harmful carbon dioxide.

And they are declining sharply.

Worldwide phytoplankton levels are down 40 percent since the 1950s, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. The likely cause is global warming, which makes it hard for the plant plankton to get vital nutrients, researchers say.

The numbers are both staggering and disturbing, say the Canadian scientists who did the study and a top U.S. government scientist.

"It's concerning because phytoplankton is the basic currency for everything going on in the ocean," said Dalhousie University biology professor Boris Worm, a study co-author. "It's almost like a recession ... that has been going on for decades."

Half a million datapoints dating to 1899 show that plant plankton levels in nearly all of the world's oceans started to drop in the 1950s. The biggest changes are in the Arctic, southern and equatorial Atlantic and equatorial Pacific oceans. Only the Indian Ocean is not showing a decline. The study's authors said it's too early to say that plant plankton is on the verge of vanishing.

Virginia Burkett, the chief climate change scientist for U.S. Geological Survey, said the plankton numbers are worrisome and show problems that can't be seen just by watching bigger more charismatic species like dolphins or whales.

"These tiny species are indicating that large-scale changes in the ocean are affecting the primary productivity of the planet," said Burkett, who wasn't involved in the study.

When plant plankton plummet - like they do during El Nino climate cycles- sea birds and marine mammals starve and die in huge numbers, experts said.

"Phytoplankton ultimately affects all of us in our daily lives," said lead author Daniel Boyce, also of Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. "Much of the oxygen in our atmosphere today was produced by phytoplankton or phytoplankton precursors over the past 2 billion years."

Plant plankton - some of it visible, some microscopic - help keep Earth cool. They take carbon dioxide - the key greenhouse gas - out of the air to keep the world from getting even warmer, Boyce said.

Worm said when the surface of the ocean gets warmer, the warm water at the top doesn't mix as easily with the cooler water below. That makes it tougher for the plant plankton which are light and often live near the ocean surface to get nutrients in deeper, cooler water. It also matches other global warming trends, with the biggest effects at the poles and around the equator.

Previous plankton research has mostly relied on satellite data that only goes back to 1978. But Worm and colleagues used a low-tech technology - disks devised by Vatican scientist Pietro Angelo Secchi, in the 19th century. These disks measure the murkiness of the ocean. The murkier the waters, the more plankton.

It's a proxy the scientific community has long accepted as legitimate, said Paul Falkowski of Rutgers University, who has used Secchi disk data for his work.

He and other independent scientists said the methods and conclusions of the new study made sense.

Instead of sitting around worrying about whether your country becomes a socialist/communist entity, or any other frivolous crap that you think is important, you might want to focus on something a little more important. Like, what's happening on our planet!

Every day I get up, it seems humanity pisses me off more and more. I am quite sure that the other living forces on, and off, this planet, wonder, "wtf is up with these humans". I have had 24 hours now to ponder what has brought about this writing. A baseball game!!

Young new pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, throws a "perfect" game against the Cleveland Indians. However, on what should have been the last out of the ninth inning, incompetent umpire blows the call at first base and rules the runner safe. Everybody in the park knew the guy was out. Upon instant replay, it was proven the runner was the last out of the game. But, since instant replay is NOT sanctioned for these types of calls, it means nothing, the umpires call stands, and Armando Galarraga is screwed out of his perfect game and place in baseball history. Not only that, but, our worthless baseball commissioner will NOT reverse the call and give the pitcher his due.

All of this brings up the deeper perspectives on everything. "What is, is, regardless of the "technicalities or technical issues involved". This pitcher threw a perfect game. It's on video for the world to see. IT HAPPENED!! The murderer walks free, even though he is proven guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt, because of some technical glitch about their rights or civil liberties. Criminals walk free everyday, businesses and governments get away with crap everyday, "all because of some bogus technicalities". "WHAT IS, IS! YOU CAN'T CHANGE WHAT IS"! When is the "vanity of humanity" going to come to grips with reality and cut through the b*llsh*t??

Orlando: Growing it, or Killing it

It has been awhile since I posted anything on here, however, does not mean I have been dormant and not "paying attention". After reading today's article in the Orlando Sentinel on the state's deal with the Seminole Tribe, I felt it was time to "express myself" and get in the "powers that be" face.

The state is moving forward with a 5 year deal that gives the Seminoles the right to run "blackjack' and Vegas style slots in 5 of their casinos. In exchange, the state gets a sizable payoff each year from the tribe. That's cool, except, there are two problems with that concept. 1)Aside from the state pari mutuals located in South Florida's Dade-Broward-Hialeah area, the rest of the states tracks and frontons get very little. No limit poker and some halfass bogus faux slot machines. These places have been around alot longer than the Seminole casinos, employe many people and are being "dissed" by the state! 2)The amount of money realized from this deal by the state is miniscule compared to what the state would realize if they legalized casinos to the casino industry. So, once again, the state caves in and comes up short. When are these "brain challenged" politicians going to wake up and get with the program? And hey, "You elected them".

Now, lets get loud and local! Orange County has the second largest convention center in the country. We are second in conventions, trailing Vegas big time. We are one of the few, if not the only, convention "mega centers" to NOT have any "action". You know, Vegas style shows, casino games, "ADULT ENTERTAINMENT"! The adults that come here for conventions, are not going to Cinderellas Castle or HogWarts or Shamu Stadium! If You want this "bigtime" convention business, "offer them something"! Or else, they will leave like the "Concrete/Cement" show did a couple years back. Do the right thing, and then, maybe You wont be sitting around gripping about not having the funds for this or that. I am sure this could be put in play, "virtually, over night"! If You had the stones to go forward with such a thing.

Downtown Orlando itself! We need a good cash flow to get things done that have already been approved and set in motion. Here's a plan that would/could make all the dreams come true. As has been suggested, "turn the old Amway Arena into a casino"! You could convert that place in no time and it would instantly start making You money and generating a revenue stream to beat the band. The money generated by this venture could fund projects You already have approved, i.e. Arts Center and renovation of the Citrus Bowl, which, in turn could land us some NFL games from the Jaguars which would generate even more cash. Not too mention, just maybe, enough revenue would flow to help with the transportation/train project, and, who knows, maybe enough cash going to the coffers to actually build a "new stadium" that could possibly attract a baseball or real football team here.

Yeah, Buddy Dyer, a "tech village" would be nice, and, could still come about somewhere else at another time. IT IS NOT GOING TO INFUSE OUR ECONOMY NOW! We need attainable fixes now, not down the road. It is time to s**t or get off the pot. We are either going to grow Orlando or wallow in stupidity going forward. Let's get this right for a change!!!

New Haitian "Boogeyman"

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - Hundreds of houses that survived Haiti's killer quake still stand empty even as quake victims desperate for shelter crowd the streets. The reason is fear: Nobody is quite sure they can withstand another quake.

At least 54 aftershocks have shuddered through Haiti's shattered capital since a Jan. 12 quake killed more than 200,000 people. They have toppled weakened buildings faster than demolition crews can get to them, sending up new clouds of choking dust. On Monday, three children were killed when a school collapsed in the northern city of Cap-Haitien. It wasn't clear what caused the collapse, which occurred after a late-night tremor and heavy rains.

"I tried sleeping in the house for a night, but an aftershock came and I ran outside," said Louise Lafonte, 36, who beds down with her family of five in a tent beside her seemingly intact concrete house. "I'm not going inside until the ground calms down."

That may be awhile. Seismologists say more, damaging aftershocks are likely and there's even a chance of another large quake following quickly after the initial catastrophe in the capital of 3 million people.

In 1751, a large quake hit the island that Haiti shares with the Dominican Republic. About a month later, another one destroyed Port-au- Prince.

A magnitude-7.4 quake that killed more than 18,000 people in northwestern Turkey in 1999 was followed three months later by another of magnitude-7.2 only 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the initial epicenter.

"There are many other examples like that of two significant earthquakes following each other," said Eric Calais, a geophysicist at Purdue University who said he warned the Haitian government two years ago that the country was vulnerable to a major quake.

The prospect of another quake is on the minds of planners trying to rebuild the country and on those trying to prevent more deaths.

U.N. inspectors have advised people to stay away from dozens of structures. On Jan. 26, four people were trapped when a building collapsed on them, and on Feb. 9, a magnitude-4.0 aftershock shook loose debris at a shattered supermarket, trapping several more.

"One of the problems with aftershocks is that lot of buildings are already damaged, so aftershocks can punch above their weight," said Brian Baptie, a seismologist with the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Seismologists say Port-au-Prince was particularly vulnerable due to its population density and shoddy construction.

Haiti's government on Sunday banned the use of quarry sand in structures, although it is not clear how it will enforce the ban. Engineers say the limestone quarry sand produces brittle concrete easily damaged by quakes.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimated at the end of January that there was a 90-percent likelihood of at least one more magnitude-5 quake in the coming month, a 15 percent likelihood of one of magnitude-6 or greater, and a 2 percent possibility of a shock as great, or bigger, than the Jan. 12 quake.

At least 15 of the aftershocks near the original epicenter have registered at least magnitude-5.

Scientists say the impact of the quake last month may spread far wider.

A magnitude-5.8 earthquake struck off the Cayman Islands two days after the Haiti quake. Last week, a magnitude-5.4 quake jolted eastern Cuba. And Montserrat's volcano, more than 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) to the east, shot ash some 15 kilometers (nine miles) into the sky during one of its most dramatic events since a 1997 eruption that drove away half the Caribbean island's population.

"These events we're seeing might be because of the passage of seismic waves - what we call dynamic triggering - that shake already damaged fault lines in places like Cuba," Calais said. "The same type of thing could be happening in Montserrat, but it's very difficult to tell."

Strong quakes relieve stress along fault lines, but that stress is often shifted elsewhere.

Last month's earthquake occurred along the east-west Enriquillo Fault, where two pieces of earth's crust slide by each other in opposite directions like a zipper. Surprisingly, aftershocks haven't clustered on the Enriquillo, but along what appears to be a previously unidentified separate fault.

Arthur Lerner-Lam of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in New York said there is a heightened risk of quakes for some time because strong temblors force the Earth to rearrange itself.

Estimating where a major quake may strike is an imprecise science anywhere - and especially in Haiti, which lacks seismometers and has never logged histories of temblors.

That sort of historical record is critical for scientists like Calais, who is advising Haiti's government and the U.N. and is trying to develop an earthquake hazard map that can be used to mitigate risks for the reconstruction effort.

"We're half-blind when it comes to Haiti," Calais said.

Active Philippines Volcano Could Erupt Within Days

The Philippines' most active volcano could erupt within days, officials warned Sunday after detecting a drastic surge in earthquakes and eerie rumbling sounds in surrounding foothills. Tens of thousands of villagers have been evacuated as a precaution.

Scientists raised the alert level for the Mayon volcano to one step below a major eruption after 453 volcanic earthquakes were detected in a five-hour span Sunday, compared to just over 200 Saturday, said Renato Solidum, chief of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Army troops and police will intensify patrols to enforce a round-the-clock ban on villagers within a five-mile danger zone around the 8,070-foot mountain, said Gov. Joey Salceda of Albay province, about 210 miles southeast of Manila.

The massive evacuations were unfortunate, coming so close before Christmas, Salceda said, but authorities will find ways to bring holiday cheer to displaced villagers in emergency shelters.

The cone-shaped volcano has already belched a plume of grayish ash half a mile into the sky, and red-hot lava has flowed about 2.8 miles down the mountainside, he said.

Residents who briefly returned to their homes within the danger zone to check on their belongings reported hearing eerie rumbling sounds.

More than 40,000 villagers have been moved to school buildings and other emergency shelters, and they should be warned from venturing back now due to the extreme danger, volcanologist July Sabit said.

Superheated gas and volcanic debris can race down the slopes at very high speed, vaporizing everything in their path.

"It's extremely dangerous," Sabit told The Associated Press by telephone.

Residents are used to playing a "cat and mouse" game with Mayon, a popular tourist attraction because of its near-perfect cone shape.

Mayon last erupted in 2006, when about 30,000 people were moved. Another eruption in 1993 killed 79 people.

The first recorded eruption was in 1616 but the most destructive came in 1814, killing more than 1,200 people and burying a town in volcanic mud. The ruins of the church in Cagsawa have become an iconic tourist spot.

The Philippines lies along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where volcanic activity and earthquakes are common. The Philippines has 22 active volcanoes.

Yellowstone Super-Volcano Far More Dangerous Than Previously Thought

The most detailed seismic images yet published of the plumbing that feeds the Yellowstone super-volcano shows a plume of hot and molten rock rising at an angle from the northwest at a depth of at least 410 miles, contradicting claims that there is no deep plume, only shallow hot rock moving like slowly boiling soup.

A related University of Utah study used gravity measurements to indicate the banana-shaped magma chamber of hot and molten rock a few miles beneath Yellowstone is 20 percent larger than previously believed, so a future cataclysmic eruption could be even larger than thought.

The study's of Yellowstone's plume also suggests the same "hotspot" that feeds Yellowstone volcanism also triggered the Columbia River "flood basalts" that buried parts of Oregon, Washington state and Idaho with lava starting 17 million years ago.

Those are key findings in four National Science Foundation-funded studies in the latest issue of the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research. The studies were led by Robert B. Smith, research professor and professor emeritus of geophysics at the University of Utah and coordinating scientist for the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory.

"We have a clear image, using seismic waves from earthquakes, showing a mantle plume that extends from beneath Yellowstone,'' Smith says.

The plume angles downward 150 miles to the west-northwest of Yellowstone and reaches a depth of at least 410 miles, Smith says. The study estimates the plume is mostly hot rock, with 1 percent to 2 percent molten rock in sponge-like voids within the hot rock.

New fossils shed light on evolution of dinosaurs

Newly described dinosaur fossils from New Mexico are helping scientists better understand the early development of these ancient creatures.

The 6-to-12 foot-long, meat-eating creature, Tawa hallae, is described in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

The first dinosaurs developed about 230 million years ago, and T. hallae skeletons date from about 213 million years ago, according to researchers led by Sterling J. Nesbitt of the University of Texas at Austin.

"Tawa gives us an unprecedented window into early dinosaur evolution, solidifying the relationships of early dinosaurs, revealing how they spread across the globe, and providing new insights into the evolution of their characteristics," Nesbitt said.

"This new dinosaur, Tawa hallae, changes our understanding of the relationships of early dinosaurs, and provides fantastic insight into the evolution of the skeleton of the first carnivorous dinosaurs" co-author Randall Irmis of the Utah Museum of Natural History, said in a statement.

While many of the earliest dinosaurs are known from only a few bones, the researchers found bones from five to seven skeletons of T. hallae, Nesbitt said in a briefing.

This dinosaur contains characteristics of several lineages that can help in understanding evolution of the various forms of dinosaurs, the scientists said.

It developed on the supercontinent Pangea, in which creatures could move from region to region before Pangea broke apart into the current continents.

Nesbitt added that the find may reinforce the idea that dinosaurs originated in what is now South America and then moved on to other regions.

T. hallae is an early form of theropod, from which the well known T. Rex later developed, as did modern birds.

Indeed, the new find had some hollow bones, as modern birds do, though it had other more lizardlike than birdlike characteristics, according to Nesbitt.

The new dinosaur is named for Tawa, the Hopi word for the Puebloan sun god, and late amateur paleontologist Ruth Hall, whose collection of fossils helped found the Ruth Hall Museum at Ghost Ranch, where the quarry in which the bones were found is located.

Also at Ghost Ranch, the researchers found fossils from other carnivorous dinosaurs only distantly related to Tawa.

At the time of the research Nesbitt was affiliated with the American Museum of Natural History in New York. In addition to Irmis, other researchers taking part were from the University of Chicago, Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Stony Brook University in New York and the Ruth Hall Museum.

The part of this story that really interests me is, the section where they talk about some of the bones being hollow like in modern birds. It also had more lizard like qualities. I am still trying to connect the dots that will lead to dragons. The hollow bone, birdlike, lizard like, carnivore features are all relevent to, especially western, dragons. We are getting closer....

A massive volcanic eruption that occurred in the distant past killed off much of central India's forests and may have pushed humans to the brink of extinction, according to a new study that adds evidence to a controversial topic.

The Toba eruption, which took place on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia about 73,000 years ago, released an estimated 800 cubic kilometers of ash into the atmosphere that blanketed the skies and blocked out sunlight for six years. In the aftermath, global temperatures dropped by as much as 28 degrees Fahrenheit and life on Earth plunged deeper into an ice age that lasted around 1,800 years.

In 1998, Stanley Ambrose, an anthropology professor at the University of Illinois, proposed in the Journal of Human Evolution that the effects of the Toba eruption and the Ice Age that followed could explain the apparent bottleneck in human populations that geneticists believe occurred between 50,000 and 100,000 years ago. The lack of genetic diversity among humans alive today suggests that during this time period humans came very close to becoming extinct.

To test his theory, Ambrose and his research team analyzed pollen from a marine core in the Bay of Bengal that had a layer of ash from the Toba eruption. The researchers also compared carbon isotope ratios in fossil soil taken from directly above and below the Toba ash in three locations in central India — some 3,000 miles from the volcano — to pinpoint the type of vegetation that existed at various locations and time periods.

Heavily forested regions leave carbon isotope fingerprints that are distinct from those of grasses or grassy woodlands.

The tests revealed a distinct change in the type of vegetation in India immediately after the Toba eruption. The researchers write in the journal Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology that their analysis indicates a shift to a "more open vegetation cover and reduced representation of ferns," which grow in humid conditions, all of which "would suggest significantly drier conditions in this region for at least 1,000 years after the Toba eruption."

The dryness probably also indicates a drop in temperature "because when you turn down the temperature you also turn down the rainfall," Ambrose said. "This is unambiguous evidence that Toba caused deforestation in the tropics for a long time."

He also concluded that the disaster may have forced the ancestors of modern humans to adopt new cooperative strategies for survival that eventually permitted them to replace Neanderthals and other archaic human species.

Although humans survived the event, researchers have detected increasing activity underneath a caldera at Yellowstone National Park, where some suspect another supervolcanic eruption will eventually take place. Though not expected to occur anytime soon, a Yellowstone eruption could coat half the United States in a layer of ash up to 3 feet deep.

So, when are humans going to realize that going to Copenhagen for a "global climate" summit is a waste of time, money and resources? And why do the people on the street with a brain know this is an exercise in futility, yet, governments don't know this, OR, have hidden agendas and don't want to know. "We cannot fix something that we cannot break". Only the universe and the planet control what goes on with the Earth. When are these so called intelligent life forms(humans), going to figure this out and STOP perpetrating their fraud on the rest of us?
